CO₂-Responsive Construction Materials: Capturing Emissions through Biomineralization

Medusoil is pioneering a new class of nature-based solutions: a bio-cement that actively captures and mineralizes atmospheric CO₂. By leveraging microbial activity, this innovative technology provides a path toward carbon-neutral and carbon-negative construction for geotechnical and building applications.

The Science: Carbon Drawdown through Microbial Activity

At the core of our solution is a naturally occurring microbe capable of converting atmospheric CO₂ into stable carbonate minerals. Our research, conducted in collaboration with SUPSI and The Laloui Group, observed that at concentrations above 470 ppm CO₂, microbial metabolism shifts to favor CO₂ hydration—the critical first step toward long-term mineralization within the material matrix.

Diverse Applications for Sustainable Infrastructure

This CO₂-responsive agent is being developed for a wide range of use cases, including:

  • Sustainable Building Components: Integrating carbon-capture into structural elements.
  • Geotechnical Interventions: Low-carbon soil stabilization and erosion control.
  • Heritage Conservation: Protective treatments for historic stone and masonry.

Supported by Innosuisse

Supported by Innosuisse, Medusoil continues to expand its portfolio of biological agents. Our goal is to provide the construction sector with proven, field-ready technologies that transform the built environment from a carbon source into a carbon sink.
