Living Architecture: Robotic Biocementation Showcase at Venice Biennale 2025
Medusoil is proud to support a world-first live showcase of microbial biofabrication at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia. Located in the Arsenale, this installation demonstrates how robotic automation and biocementation can create sustainable, living architectural structures.
Robotic Biofabrication in Action
The exhibition, titled “Geological Microbial Formations,” features a continuous robotic construction site. A robotic arm builds architectural forms by layering granulates and applying specialized biocementation agents. These agents are enriched with native soil and groundwater microbes, triggering natural mineralization to bind the material into a solid structure.

Inspired by Nature: Stromatolite Formation
This pioneering project is inspired by the natural formation of stromatolites—biogenic structures created by microorganisms. By combining robotic precision with organic binders, the installation celebrates the collaboration between matter, microbes, and machines, redefining the future of sustainable urban development.
Academic and Industry Collaboration
This achievement is the result of a partnership between Medusoil and leading academic institutions, including ETH Zurich (D-ARCH and ITA) and the ALIVE Initiative. Technical support from Universal Robots and EBERHARD AG has been instrumental in scaling this microbial biofabrication process for live public demonstration.
