Bio-Cementation for Erosion Defence on River Dikes

Bio-Cementation for Erosion Defense on River Dikes: Medusoil & Fugro Collaboration

Medusoil is collaborating with Fugro, a global leader in flood defense, to advance bio-cementation solutions for river dike protection. By enhancing the erosion resistance of sandy river dike foreshores, we provide a sustainable alternative to traditional levee toe reinforcement methods.

Addressing Erosion Risks in Flood Defense

Sandy foreshores and levee toes are highly susceptible to erosion during flood events, compromising the stability of critical flood defense infrastructure. Traditional reinforcement often relies on high-carbon materials or heavy mechanical structures. Medusoil’s biocementation technologyAddresses these site constraints by using natural mineralization to bind soil particles, creating a resilient and environmentally safe barrier.

Field and Laboratory Erosion Testing

To validate the performance of bio-mineralized soil, Fugro has implemented a comprehensive testing framework. Using advanced methods such as the Plate Erosion Test (PET), Jet Erosion Test (JET), and Hole Erosion Test (HET), we assess erosion resistance both in-situ and in controlled lab environments. These results support data-driven decision-making for large-scale geotechnical works.

Sustainable Geotechnical Innovation

This collaboration blends Fugro’s expertise in geotechnical monitoring with Medusoil’s bio-based binders. Our goal is to develop standardized engineering frameworks for sustainable soil improvement that can be deployed across European river networks to mitigate climate-related erosion risks.
